How Does America Want Their Coffee?

by Nathanael Curtis

Would you give up social media over coffee? Over a third of Americans say yes! Ahead of National Coffee Day, Bunn commissioned a survey to find out exactly how Americans feel about their coffee. Do we want it hot or iced? Do we want to make it ourselves or get it from a cafe? Exactly how important is coffee to our daily lives? Bunn’s survey of 2000 respondents, conducted by the market research company OnePoll, sought to find answers about American’s coffee drinking habits and priorities.

Respondents had a variety of preferences for coffee style. Almost half (48%) preferred traditionally brewed hot coffee, 20% preferred cold brew, 18% preferred iced coffee, 7% preferred frozen coffee beverages, and 5% preferred espresso based drinks.

Those that preferred hot coffee seemed to have the most passion for the beverage. While most participants (81%) claimed that coffee is what motivated them to get up in the morning, this percentage climbed to 86% for hot coffee drinkers. By comparison, only 66% of “frappe” drinkers made similar claims.

The hot coffee drinking crowd was so enthusiastic that 42% of them said they would rather give up social media than their favorite beverage. Only 36% of the general survey respondents said they would give up coffee for social media.

As a manufacturer of coffeemakers, Bunn also asked respondents about their home brewing habits. They are proud to share that 48% of Americans have tried to recreate their favorite cafe beverages at home with 92% satisfaction. However, the survey results show a bit more nuance than this. 71% of respondents still preferred to have their morning brew prepared by a skilled barista.

Additionally, of those that attempted to make their beverages at home, only 27% rated these results as “excellent.” Some admitted to struggling to dial in coffee dosage, grind size, and choosing filters while making coffee at home. Others were concerned with the ease of preparation and the cost of coffee equipment.

Brandi Goodin, BUNN Vice President of Marketing Communications, said in a statement, “While measuring correctly and using quality coffee beans are vital, the importance of having the right equipment cannot be overlooked. Investing in the right brewing equipment will elevate your coffee experience to new heights. Bottom line: find what works for you and have fun with it!”

The VP of Marketing’s claims that the right equipment is of foremost importance may seem biased, but she’s right about one thing. Coffee is supposed to be fun, and it’s all about finding what works for you. Maybe you want to try brewing at home. Maybe you don’t have time and prefer to pick up a fresh cup from a cafe. Maybe you want a straight cup of coffee, or maybe you want a PSL with oat milk to welcome the Fall.
